E. Cristina Díaz-Arntzen - Artist's Statement

Prior to moving to Albuquerque in 2004 with her husband David, Cristina Díaz-Arntzen spent 28 years teaching in Wisconsin. Cristina fell passionately in love with the Southwest and the Native American culture when she moved to Albuquerque.

Cristina's art interests cross many mediums: weaving, beading, wire wrapping jewelry and crocheting and it shows in her various designs. When a friend encouraged her to attend a punch quilting class at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, she embraced the technique.

Punch quilting mimics quilting to create a fabric wall hanging without making a single stitch. Through this art medium, Cristina incorporates creativity and color to shape fabric arts wall hangings of southwestern animals, landscapes, and Native American women adorned with costumes and mystical designs.

Cristina has shown and sold her punch quilts fabric arts wall hangings at the Farmington Museum, the New Mexico State Fair, The Blue Portal, The Easel Place, The Wooden Cow Gallery, Amapola Gallery and numerous art shows. Many of Cristina’s wall hangings are display in homes around the world.

Cristina regularly teaches Punch Quilting at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center.
